The Great Gray owl
swoops over one of the first snows of the season searching for
prey. The Great Gray has a wingspan of 52 inches and a length
of 27 inches, making it the longest owl. The owl is easily identified
with its large gray facial disc and black and white "bow
tie."A bird of northern forests, it can also be found in
mountainous areas of the Western US. During some years, when
prey species are scarce in the North, "explosions"
of Great Grey Owl make their way far south of their normal range.

Lewis and Clark
Bicentennial 1905-2005:
Wildlife at the
Journey's End
This painting pays
tribute to the journals of the Corps of Discovery and the map-making
of William Clark. It depicts the wildlife noted by Lewis and
Clark as they passed down the Columbia River to the Pacific
Ocean. Each species included is of special interest or significance.
Some species, such as California condor and sea otter, are no
longer found in the region. Chinook and coho salmon, eulachon,
sandhill crane and Roosevelt elk were important food sources
at the time. Columbian black-tailed deer and the two species
of swan-tundra and trumpeter-were brilliantly described to us
for the first time by these great explores.
